This breed are prone to heart abnormalities such as mitral valve disease at an early stage, therefore regular veterinary examinations are an absolute necessity. They may also suffer from other diseases which include:

- Deafness

- Hip dysplasia
- Luxating patellas
- Vision disorders such as cataracts and retinal dysplasia
